Not just denied it but actively defended things like homophobia or misogyny ("it's just their culture, that's all")

What if the smart progressive people that you ordinarily admire actively praised people like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwel as "men of peace" who are "misunderstood because of ignorance and bigotry"?

Seriously? How would you react to that?

Would you speak out against it?How would u react if all of the smart critical people around u denied that Christianity has ever created evil?It appears that it's the Fundamentalist Christians who seem so preoccupied with the gays and their practises. Regular mainstream Christians I have known are pretty much accepting of all people.

Could explain why so many Fundamentalist preachers/politicians and their ilk of late have been exposed as repressed homosexuals themselves...|||That is a tough call. Reaction-wise, I would feel let down, if the individuals in question were people that I admired. Realistically though, if you speak out against it, you should be prepared for a debate... and very likely one that will cause nothing but frustration and animosity for you both. No matter how well read you are, or how flawless your arguments, entering battles of religion or politics is very frequently a losing battle. You are unlikely to persuade someone of something, if they have long held the contrary position. Since the issue is one of both politics AND religion, I would stay right out of it. Smart people can still believe stupid things.

Don't bother. Find another battle to fight, if you are politically inclined. Or help with groups who fight homophobia/misogeny/stupidity in other ways. This is not a battle that you can win.How would u react if all of the smart critical people around u denied that Christianity has ever created evil? How would u react if all of the smart critical people around u denied that Christianity has ever created evil?
christianity has not created evil they would be right
evil men create evil not christians
christianity does not teach people to be evil or murder or hate

they would not be smart if they supported those two people|||I would say .... what if, you pay no mind to those people and thoughts? If you don't focus on something then it can't bother you. Let them "be" if you don't like it. Pay attention instead to what you believe. Pay them no mind. So what if they don't think like you.
Christianity means Christ like. Some of them forgot or don't know what that means.
Don't let it matter to you.
You said that you actively praised those people. Those people didn't change. Only your perspective changed about them. How would u react if all of the smart critical people around u denied that Christianity has ever created evil?Assuming they're not deliberately winding me up, that's the point where I would realise they're not actually smart.

I've never encountered such a thing, where rational people suddenly become very different, and if it happened to any one, I may even think it possible they've become ill.

If *everyone* did it I'd feel pretty sure it's a wind-up! That being the sort of wind-up I'd take part in...|||Depends what you mean by Christianity...seems like a lot of people throw it around a lot. Personally, I believe Christianity, is simply following Christ's ways of life. If that is what you speak of, I would agree, that the ways of Christ has never created evil.

The Church on the other hand......that's a whole different story.|||Shut up. We never created evil coz light and darkness dont mix. We are not homophobic.

Tell me one thing that Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwel did that brought violence of any kind into the world.|||Stand by what God says, God never said we would catch roses, but that the world would hate us, as it hated Him.

God is our cheerleader and Lord, not the world.

You answer to God, not CNN.|||What? If all the smart people denied that Christianity created evil? That question makes no sense.|||With astonishment.|||people don't create evil... satan does and did.
people carry out evil.. commit evil.|||Screw that. If either of those men were drowning, I wouldn't even throw them a styrofoam packing peanut.|||well, then they wouldn't be smart anymore
