I have to relate the Smart Thermostat (one of Time magazine's top fifty 2009 inventions) to Physics. I am terrible at physics though and have no idea. What does a Smart thermostat have to do with Physics?Newton's law of cooling says that the rate at which you lose energy through the walls, roof, and windows of your house is proportional to the *difference* in the temperature between the outside and the inside. If you use a "smart" thermostat to turn down the temperature when you don't need for it to be high (when you are not home, when you are asleep, etc.), you will cut down on the energy you lose to the outside.
